NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Lipscomb University is preparing a graduation ceremony for associate's degree earners at the Tennessee Prison for Women.

Eight women at the prison, plus one other inmate at another facility, took college-level courses over the past eight years to earn their degrees. The graduation ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 13 at the prison's gymnasium in Nashville.

Under the Lipscomb Initiative For Education program, the school sends faculty members to the prison each Wednesday evening to teach courses in subjects like art history, judicial process, Christian ethics, community engagement, math, English and physics.

Up to 15 students from Lipscomb's main campus also travel to the prison each week to take courses alongside the inmates.

Lipscomb is a Churches of Christ-affiliated private university in Nashville with an enrollment of 4,600.
