NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Eight Fire Department employees are on leave after paramedics left a bleeding man who had shot himself in the head.
According to documents, the victim's roommate called 911 at 3:02 a.m. on Wednesday. Paramedics arrived at the scene 6 minutes later and began resuscitation efforts. At 3:48 they were filling out paperwork stating that the 32-year-old's injuries were incompatible with life.
They left the scene but had to return at 5:06 a.m. and transport the victim to the hospital.
A police incident report says that Vanderbilt Hospital instructed the paramedics not to transport the victim initially. A statement from Vanderbilt says they are reviewing their protocol.
Meanwhile, Fire Department Medical Director Corey Slovis said paramedics used a protocol that should only be used for patients with no signs of life.
