Wyoming Approves Yellowstone-Area Grizzly Hunting

Grizzly bear hunting is returning to Wyoming and lands near Yellowstone National Park for the first time in more than 40 years.  Wyoming wildlife officials on Wednesday approved the state's first grizzly bear hunt since 1975.  Hunting groups are cheering the decision, which is condemned by Native Americans and environmental groups trying to restore Endangered Species Act protection for the bears.  Hunters will be allowed to take as many as 22 bears in a season that begins September 1st.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service formally proposed de-listing the bears as a threatened species in 2016.  The agency said the bears' numbers have increased enough in recent decades that they don't need federal protection.  It announced last June it would de-list the animals.
