13-Year-Old Driver Facing Homicide Charges After Fatal Collision

A 13 year old is facing a vehicular homicide charge after police said the teen drove into a parked car in South Nashville Friday morning (March 5), killing a 71-year-old man. The teen's name has not been released.

Metro Nashville Police said the man, identified as David Cheatham, was sitting in his parked vehicle at O'Reilly Auto Parks on Nolensville Pike around 9 a.m. when a car driven by the teen crashed into his vehicle. The juvenile was reportedly fleeing from a hit-and-run crash on Danby Drive and Blackman Road, FOX 17 reports, when they lost control of the white Dodge Dart he was driving.

According to the news outlet, police are unsure of how the teen gained access to the car they were driving. The Dodge Dart had not been reported stolen and they could not get in touch with the owner of the vehicle.

The teen was taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to receive treatment for non-life threatening injures, but Cheatham died on the scene. Police said upon their release from the hospital, the teen will face several charges, including vehicular homicide by recklessness.

As of Friday afternoon, no additional details or charges against the teen have been announced.
