How To Help After Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee Tornadoes

The National Weather Service confirmed that at least four states were hit by more than 30 tornadoes on Friday night and into early Saturday morning, including Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Kentucky

  • Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency early Saturday morning due to major tornado damage in Mayfield and Bowling Green, activating the Kentucky Guard and State Police. Governor Beshear believes the death toll will exceed 50 and could result in numbers close to 100. He says this has been "one of the toughest nights in Kentucky history".

    An Emergency Operations Center has been established on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
  • Residents in need of shelter are being directed to South Warren High School, according to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Breckenridge County announced shelters opening in the state park in McDaniels, the old courthouse In Hardinsburg, Irvington Baptist Church, Cloverport Firehouse and Rough River State Park.
  • Nelson County also announced shelters available for residents in Bardstown. Residents in need of shelter are advised to call the non-emergency dispatch number at 502-348-3211.

Tennessee

Tennessee Health Department has reported that 3 people are dead in West Tennessee after storms blew through the area with winds exceeding 80 mph.Search and rescue operations are continuing throughout the state Saturday morning. The Mount Juliet Fire Department reported roof damage. Police received structural damage reports on Nolensville Pike, Fairview Drive and other areas across the region.Nashville Electric Services reported over 90,000 power outages Saturday morning.

    Dickson County, TN
    Dickson County Family YMCA is open for anyone in need of a place to stay. People can use the showers, charge cell phones, or get a meal. 

Arkansas

At least one person has died at a nursing facility, in the small northeast Arkansas town of Monette, and five others were injured. There were also reports of as many as 20 people being trapped under collapsed portions of the building.

Illinois

A tornado caused a roof to collapse at an Amazon distribution center in Edwardsville, Illinois, on Friday night, and those at the scene reported almost half the building appeared to be damaged. Workers were trapped in the building as emergency responders arrived and evacuated up to 100 people.
