Tennessee state employees can now have extended paid family leave thanks to Gov. Bill Lee.

With the new plan announced Tuesday, workers who are experiencing life events -- such as the birth of a child, adoption or foster care, as well as care for a sick family member, can have up to 12 weeks of annual paid family leave.

Gov. Lee's administration said the new benefits will assist in reducing state employee turnover rates, as well as assist the state in health care cost savings. The new changes will not require additional state money.

They also reiterated that the requirement will not be placed on local governments or private employers

Tennessee is now one of 11 states that offer paid family leave.
