NASHVILLE, Tenn.--As more Tennessee counties continue to push "Second Amendment Sanctuary County" policies, one Tennessee lawmaker wants the state as a whole to support the Second Amendment.
A resolution going to the House floor Monday evening was filed by Rep. James Micah Van Huss last session and reaffirms Tennessean's right to bear arms.
HJR 748 cites a book which states 262 million people worldwide have been killed by their governments and says it is a "God-given" liberty to stand against a tyrannical government.
"We avow that Tennessee will not comply with extra-constitutional actions from any government or body that infringes on our citizens' right to keep and bear arms," the legislation states.
The bill specifically states citizens have the right to bear arms which includes AR-15s, AK-47s, and similar firearms.
Other bills before the House on Monday include HB2108, which allows off-duty officers to carry concealed handguns under certain circumstances. Also on the agenda is HB2590, which allows elected officials at the county or municipal level to carry a handgun in judicial buildings if they have a valid carry permit. However, the weapon could not be carried into the room of actual judicial proceedings.
