Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey is expected to file as an independent when he runs for reelection, according to a report from the New Jersey Globe.

The Democratic Senator is currently on trial for bribery, along with his wife, Nadine, and two New Jersey businessmen, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes.

In March, Menendez announced he would not run for a fourth term as a Democrat but left the door open to run as an independent candidate. By running for reelection, Menendez can continue to raise money and use campaign funds to pay for his legal expenses.

The embattled Senator faces a Tuesday (June 4) deadline to file as an independent. If he chooses not to run at a later date, he has until August 16 to withdraw from the ballot.

Three Democrats and four Republicans are currently seeking the nomination of their respective parties in New Jersey's primary election on Tuesday.
