A popular vegetable found in stores around the country — including in Tennessee — has been recalled over a "severe" health risk.

Grimmway Farms issued a nationwide recall of select organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots due to a potential E. coli contamination, according to a November 16 release from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. The affected products were sold between August 14 and October 23, 2024, and while the veggies are no longer available in grocery stores, many consumers may still have stored away in refrigerators.

The recall impacts several labels of organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots, including 365, Good & Gather, Marketside, Nature's Promise, Simple Truth and Trader Joe's, among others. See the full list of affected products on the FDA's website.

According to the FDA, the recall is connected to an ongoing outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, which can cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system." Symptoms can include "severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports there have been at least 39 illnesses, 15 of which included hospitalizations, and one death in connection to the outbreak.

If you have any of the affected products, the FDA urges to throw them out immediately and sanitize any surface they may have touched to reduce the risk of getting sick.
