A former school board member is criticizing MNPS Director Doctor Adrienne Battle over the district's lack of metal detectors. Fran Bush says she has been advocating for the devices since she last served on the board in 2022 and believes they would have prevented the tragedy at Antioch High School on Wednesday. MNPS officials say metal detectors are not standard equipment in the district's traditional or magnet schools and Doctor Battle has shown reluctance to install them, saying they have limitations and "unintended consequences". Antioch High does have an AI-driven weapon detection system installed along with their security cameras but the shooter was not in an area where the gun could be picked up, according to school spokesperson Sean Braisted.
