A massive pileup involving more than 100 vehicles occurred on Interstate 84 near Multnomah Falls, Oregon, on Thursday (February 13) due to near-whiteout conditions. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office reported that the crash involved cars, trucks, and semi-trucks, with an SUV catching fire. Fortunately, all occupants of the SUV escaped safely.
The pileup happened as winter weather swept through the Columbia River Gorge, creating hazardous driving conditions. Authorities urged those involved to remain inside their vehicles until it was safe to move. Multiple agencies, including the Oregon State Police, responded to the scene to assist and clear the interstate.
Four people sustained minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals, according to Oregon State Police.
The westbound lanes of I-84 were closed for several hours but have since reopened, although traffic remains slow as the backlog clears. The Oregon Department of Transportation has advised drivers to exercise caution due to ongoing icy and slick road conditions.
