The Metro Nashville Council kicked off February with a public hearing on the city's upcoming 2027 budget, giving residents a chance to weigh in on spending priorities. Dozens of Nashvillians spoke, with many backing a $35 million proposal from nonprofit Stand Up Nashville called "I Want You To Stay." It would fund eviction right-to-counsel programs, rental assistance, a 50-unit mixed-income housing pilot, and an emergency WeGo fare fund. Affordable housing was a key focus, with supporters asking for $30 million for the Barnes Housing Trust Fund, along with more funding for legal aid for low-income defendants, community safety programs, and essential worker support. Council members will consider these proposals as budget negotiations begin later this spring after Mayor Freddie O'Connell files his recommended budget.
