President Donald Trump said he's "not looking" to pursue a potential third term despite previously teasing potentially figuring out a way past the 22nd Amendment prohibiting such action.

“I will say this. So many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that. But it’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do,” Trump claimed during his Meet the Press interview on Sunday (May 4). “This is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican.”

Trump had previously claimed that others wanted him to seek a third term, which would require a real of the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibiting a president from running for more than two terms.

“A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said, referring to his allies. “But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.” Trump said during an earlier interview with NBC News on March 30.

“There are methods which you could do it," he added when asked how he would seek a third term despite the 22nd Amendment prohibiting such action.

The president did, however, name Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as his potential successors during his Meet the Press interview.

“It’s far too early to say that. But you know, I do have a vice president … and JD’s doing a fantastic job,” Trump said. “I don’t want to get involved in that. I think he’s a fantastic, brilliant guy. Marco is great. There’s a lot of them that are great,” he added. “We have a lot of good people in this party.”
